Research Description

My research focuses on understanding the role of dietary fats in human health and disease. The goal is to better understand the effects of fats throughout the lifecycle from the early beginnings of life to old age in both the prevention and treatment of disease. This is particularly relevant for diseases such as cancer, obesity and Alzheimer's disease.

Research Summary

Currently, there are several major areas of research focus including the study of basic fatty acid metabolism, understanding the association between plasma fatty acids and health outcomes, omega-3 fatty acids in the prevention of breast cancer, and examining determinants of health in the Guelph Family Health Study. In addition, related projects include the study of fats in brain health (concussion, Alzheimer's Disease), fatty liver disease, fatty acid metabolism, bone development and nutrigenomics.

Techniques Used

Fatty acid analysis by gas liquid chromatography; molecular biology (WB, PCR); transgenics; analytical chemistry.

Lab Equipment

Gas chromatograph Agilent 6890 and 7890; flow cytometer with cell sorting capability; ultracentrifuge; cell culture.

Locations of international collaborators

University of Bremen and BIPS (Germany); A*Star (Singapore); University of Adelaide (Australia)
